About this artwork

This oil painting on canvas shows a bearded man wearing a hat and a broad cloak, handled in thin, loose strokes. It comes from the Netherlands and is dated to around 1655–60. In Amsterdam, Rembrandt lived among Jewish communities and drew inspiration from the manner and dress of the Ashkenazim. For that reason, unnamed portraits from his late years were once linked to Jewish sitters. This one was at various times thought to portray the philosopher Baruch Spinoza, or a Jewish student, but those ideas have since been reconsidered. Today the painting is thought likely to have come from Rembrandt's workshop.

On your wall: Its single figure and painterly handling suit a study, library, hallway or quiet corner of a living room, especially where a traditional or book-filled setting is wanted.
