Monet painted this view of Vétheuil in 1880, in oil on canvas. We look across a grassy hillside towards a village by the river, with a hill rising behind the rooftops and a pale sky above. The scene is handled in the loose, observant manner of Impressionism, where the aim is to capture nature as it appears to the eye. Today the work belongs to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. It is a calm, open landscape, with the foreground slope leading the viewer gently towards the water and the village beyond.
On your wall: Its soft landscape tones and calm village scene suit living rooms, hallways, bedrooms and studies where a quiet, natural view is welcome.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
