About this artwork

This is a lithographic poster from 1920 by Roger Broders, titled Alger, with the subtitle La ville blanche. It was made as tourism advertising for the Paris to Lyon and Mediterranean railway company, and it invites the viewer to picture a journey to Algiers. It was printed in colour by Cornille & Serre in Paris, and the full-size poster measures 108 by 76 centimetres. Broders was a French illustrator best known for his travel posters, and this one belongs to that tradition of clear, appealing images made to promote a destination.

On your wall: Its travel-poster character suits a hallway, study or living room, and works well alongside other vintage prints or in a space with a Mediterranean feel.
