About this artwork

This is a French advertising poster from 1911, designed by Leonetto Cappiello for C. Beriot of Lille and its extra chicory, sold through A la Belle Jardinière. It belongs to the subject of drinks. It was printed in colour by lithography at the Vercasson press in Paris, and it is large, measuring 160 by 113 centimetres in its original form. Cappiello is often called the father of modern advertising, and he became known for bold figures set against dark backgrounds, a striking change from the more painterly posters that came before.

On your wall: A good fit for a kitchen, dining room or café-style corner, where its vintage advertising character will sit comfortably alongside other retro posters.

About Leonetto Cappiello

While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
