About this artwork

This photograph by Karl Blossfeldt brings us very close to an allium flower head as it emerges from its papery spathe on a single stem. The sepia tones and plain light background leave nothing to distract from the plant's form. Blossfeldt is best known for close-up studies of plants, which he published in 1929 as Urformen der Kunst. He was inspired, as his father was, by nature and the ways in which plants grow.

On your wall: Its soft sepia tones and quiet, uncluttered composition suit calm living rooms, studies, bedrooms and hallways, especially in minimalist or neutral interiors.
