This is a poster by Edward Penfield, made in 1894 and part of his series of posters for Harper's Magazine. It sits within the fashion of that year, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art holds it among its prints. Penfield was an American illustrator working in what is often called the Golden Age of American Illustration, and he is regarded as the father of the American poster. He also played a significant part in the development of graphic design, which makes this piece a pleasing example of the poster as an art form in its early years.
On your wall: Its period poster character suits a study, hallway, living room or café-style kitchen where vintage graphic design is welcome.
