Pissarro painted this landscape in 1898, and its subject is Oissel-sur-Seine, near Rouen, where a cotton mill stands as the focus of the view. It is an oil painting on canvas and belongs to the Impressionist tradition with which the artist is closely linked. The work is now in the collection of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Pissarro was born on the island of Saint Thomas and worked in both Impressionist and Neo-Impressionist styles, and this picture shows him turning his attention to a working corner of the French countryside.
On your wall: A landscape with a mill and a river-town setting, it would sit well in a living room, study or hallway where a calm, outdoor scene is welcome.

Camille Pissarro was a Danish-French painter, born on the island of Saint Thomas, who contributed to both Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. He learned from earlier masters such as Gustave Courbet and Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. At 54 he took up the Neo-Impressionist style, studying and working alongside Georges Seurat and Paul Signac.
