This oil painting on canvas from 1912 shows Jagdschloss Grunewald, the hunting lodge named in its title. Oskar Schlemmer, the German painter, sculptor, designer and choreographer later associated with the Bauhaus, took a specific building as his subject here. The work is held today in the Berlinische Galerie. It is a good example of how an artist can approach a recognisable place through paint and form, rather than simple record.
On your wall: Suits a study, hallway or living room where an architectural subject and a modern, abstract sensibility can add quiet character.
