About this artwork

In Fabeltier II (Pferd), Franz Marc paints a horse in warm red-orange, its dark mane falling as it bends its head down. Around the animal, the background breaks into fractured planes of blue, green and orange, so that the figure and its surroundings seem to interlock. The treatment blends cubist and expressionist ideas, favouring colour and angular form over close detail. The painting carries the artist's initial, M. Marc was a German painter and printmaker, and a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter.

On your wall: Its strong red-orange against cool blues and greens suits a living room, study or hallway where a modern, colourful focal point is wanted.
