This is a poster for Bec Auer, a make of incandescent gas mantles, created by Henri Privat-Livemont in 1896. It belongs to the tradition of advertising posters, where an artist's design was put to work selling an everyday product. Privat-Livemont (1861–1936) was a Belgian Symbolist painter and Art Nouveau decorator, and he sometimes signed his work as T. Privat-Livemont. For anyone who enjoys the look of late nineteenth-century commercial art, it is a neat example of how a household item of the time was presented to the public.
On your wall: A good fit for a study, hallway, kitchen or café-style corner where vintage advertising posters and period character are welcome.
