Franz Marc, 1911
A leaping yellow cow, a red one and a green one move through a landscape of bold, abstracted colour. Franz Marc gives the animals a vivid, almost musical presence.

Three cows, one yellow and leaping, one red and one green, share a landscape broken into bright, abstracted shapes. Colour does much of the work here: rather than describing the animals as they appear in a field, the painting sets them in a vivid, freely arranged world. It is an Expressionist work in oil on canvas by Franz Marc, a German painter and one of the key figures of German Expressionism. Marc was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter. The painting is held at the Lenbachhaus.
On your wall: Its saturated reds, greens and yellows bring energy to a living room, a study or a hallway, and suit modern interiors with plain walls that let the colour stand out.

Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker, counted among the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a journal whose name came to describe the wider circle of artists who worked together around it. His place in that movement is central to how he is remembered.
