About this artwork

Painted in 1913, this work brings together a blue horse and a red dog, two creatures that belong to an imagined rather than an observed world. Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker, and a key figure of German Expressionism. He was also a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, the name later given to the circle of artists who worked together around that journal. This painting is held today in the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, where it can be seen as part of the collection.

On your wall: Its blue and red animals would bring a lively, modern note to a living room, study or hallway that welcomes bold, abstract art.
