Painted in 1911, Rehe im Schnee shows two roe deer in a snowy setting. Their coats are a warm reddish-brown, and the landscape around them is simplified and stylised in the Expressionist manner. One deer lowers its head to graze while the other looks back over its shoulder. The work is oil on canvas and is held at the Lenbachhaus. Marc was a German painter and a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, and this picture shows his way of treating animals and landscape with bold simplification.
On your wall: The warm russet tones against pale snow suit living rooms, studies and calm bedrooms, especially where a modern interior needs a touch of nature.

Franz Marc was a German painter and printmaker, counted among the key figures of German Expressionism. He was a founding member of Der Blaue Reiter, a journal whose name came to describe the wider circle of artists who worked together around it. His place in that movement is central to how he is remembered.
