Painted in 1924 in France, Chevaux de cirque takes up the theme of circus horse dressage, a subject that suits Raoul Dufy's interest in performance and movement. Dufy was a French painter linked with the Fauvists, and he became known for a vibrant, decorative style that reached well beyond painting, into textile design and the decoration of public buildings. Here, horses are the focus, shown as part of the spectacle of the ring.
