Improvisation No. 4 is an oil painting on canvas made by Wassily Kandinsky in 1909. It belongs to the Art Museum of Nizhny Novgorod, in a collection of Russian avant-garde work. Kandinsky was born in Moscow and began his painting studies at thirty. He later worked in Germany and is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. The title points to a spontaneous, musical way of working, and the painting invites you to follow its colour and form with your own eye rather than look for a fixed scene.
On your wall: A good fit for modern living rooms, studies and creative spaces where an abstract, expressive painting can bring movement and colour to the walls.
