This plate from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis, dated 1620, is an engraving coloured by hand. It shows a purple peony in full, with its root and seed head, so the whole plant can be studied. Two smaller plants, Sanicula and Alchimilla, stand on either side. The peony is labelled 'Paeonia mas flore purpureo', and the plate is numbered 106. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and the Hortus Eystettensis is the large florilegium he is best known for.
On your wall: Its deep purple flower and careful botanical detail suit a study, hallway, dining room or reading corner, especially where a calm, traditional or naturally inspired scheme is wanted.
