This is a hand-coloured botanical engraving of a pink double gallica rose, shown with red buds and leaves. It is known as Rosa gallica aurelianensis, or 'La Duchesse d'Orléans'. The inscription credits Pierre-Joseph Redouté as the painter of the design and Langlois as the engraver. Redouté was a painter and botanist best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, and the work belongs to his series of rose illustrations, Les Roses. Dated 1824, it shows how a printed image could carry the precision of a botanical record together with the delicacy of painted colour.
On your wall: The soft pink and red tones suit bedrooms, dining rooms, studies and hallways, especially in calm, traditional or lightly decorated spaces where a quiet botanical print is welcome.

Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a painter and botanist from the Austrian Netherlands. He is best known for his watercolours of roses, lilies and other flowers, painted at the Château de Malmaison. Many were published as large coloured stipple engravings. Admirers nicknamed him "the Raphael of flowers", and he has often been ranked among the finest botanical illustrators.
