About this artwork

Divan Japonais is a lithograph poster made to advertise a café-chantant of the same name. It shows three people from Toulouse-Lautrec's Montmartre. In the audience sit the dancer Jane Avril and, beside her, the writer Édouard Dujardin, both watching a performance by Yvette Guilbert. Her face is left out of the picture, yet she can still be identified by her tall, thin frame and long black gloves. The work is dated 1893 and printed in ink on wove paper. It is a good example of how Toulouse-Lautrec turned the theatrical nightlife of his city into a popular, everyday art form.

On your wall: It suits a living room, study or dining area where a retro poster, with its theatrical Parisian subject, can bring some character and a sense of nightlife to the wall.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
