About this artwork

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec made this print in 1896. Its title places us in the Irish and American Bar on the rue Royale, a Paris drinking spot of the kind that suited an artist so drawn to the city's social life. It is a lithograph, a medium Toulouse-Lautrec worked in often, and it belongs to the Rosenwald Collection of prints at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. The image is also linked with his work for The Chap Book. Today it sits comfortably within the Retro & vintage poster tradition, with the confident, graphic character that Lautrec brought to printmaking.

On your wall: Well suited to a bar, kitchen, dining room or study, where its vintage poster character and Parisian bar subject add a sociable, characterful note.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
