Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, 1894
A masked woman in a red gown and a photographer hidden beneath his camera cloth: a lively Paris advertisement from Toulouse-Lautrec.

This colour lithograph is a poster advertising P. Sescau, Photographe, whose studio was at 9 Place Pigalle. A woman in a red gown, wearing a mask, takes the foreground. Behind her, the photographer is almost entirely hidden under the cloth that covers him as he stands at his camera. Toulouse-Lautrec made it in 1894, and it shows how he could turn a simple commercial message into a playful, theatrical scene.
On your wall: Its bold red and theatrical figures suit a living room, study or hallway, and sit especially well in a space with a retro or vintage feel.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
