About this artwork

This poster shows May Belfort in a long red dress and bonnet, cradling a black cat in her arms. Her name is lettered across the bottom of the sheet, and the artist's HTL monogram sits within the composition. It is a colour lithograph on paper, made in 1895 by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Colour lithography allowed flat areas of bold colour to be printed across the sheet, which gives the poster its graphic, immediately readable quality. The work is associated with Art Nouveau and sits within the poster tradition of Paris in the Belle Époque.

On your wall: The strong red and black tones suit a living room, study or hallway, and sit well alongside vintage-inspired or neutral interiors.

About Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was a French painter, printmaker, draughtsman, caricaturist and illustrator. He worked in Paris during the Belle Époque, the late nineteenth century, and threw himself into the city's colourful, theatrical life. That immersion shaped his popular artworks, which drew their subjects from the lively and often decadent world around him.
