Echinidea is plate 30 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, dated 1904. It brings together sea urchins of three kinds: Clypeaster rosaceus, Encope emarginata and the small Echinocyamus pusillus. The shells are drawn without their spines, some seen from above and others from below, and one view shows the internal organs of Clypeaster rosaceus. The plate also follows Echinocyamus pusillus through its growth, from a larva at 48 hours and again at 10 days, to juveniles at 45, 50 and 60 days. It is a study in form and in change over time, set out with the order of a scientific illustration.
On your wall: Its detailed natural-history subject suits a study, library, hallway or living room, particularly where botanical and scientific prints are already gathered together.
