This is the second study for Composition VII, painted by Wassily Kandinsky in 1913. The title marks it as a preparatory work, a step towards a larger composition. Kandinsky is generally credited as one of the pioneers of abstraction in Western art. He was a Russian painter and art theorist who worked in Germany, and he began his painting studies at the age of 30. Seen alongside that history, this study offers a way into the abstract approach for which he is known.
On your wall: Its abstract character suits modern interiors such as living rooms, studies and creative spaces, where a work with a sense of movement can anchor the wall.
