About this artwork

This 1922 watercolour by Paul Klee presents stylised architectural forms, as if built from simple blocks of colour. Large dark arrows run through the scene, guiding the eye across it, while a sun and a crescent moon sit among the shapes. The title points to a mural from a Temple of Longing, with the arrow in the title echoing the arrows within the picture. Klee set the watercolour on a mount that he inscribed himself, so the work and its presentation belong together. Today it is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On your wall: Its graphic arrows and architectural shapes suit modern living rooms, studies and hallways, especially where a thoughtful, abstract piece is wanted to bring character to a clean, contemporary space.

About Paul Klee

Paul Klee was a Swiss-born German artist whose style was entirely his own. Over his career he drew on several movements, including expressionism, cubism and surrealism, and blended these influences into work that remains unmistakably his. For a Swiss customer, there is something pleasing in seeing a compatriot's imagination so distinctively at play.
