Ivy dates from 1901 and comes from Alphonse Mucha, the Czech painter, illustrator and graphic artist who worked in Paris during the Art Nouveau period. It belongs to a group of his Art Nouveau images of women, and the plant in the title gives it a natural, ornamental theme. Mucha was widely known for stylised, decorative posters, especially his theatrical ones for Sarah Bernhardt, as well as illustrations, advertisements and decorative panels. His work remains some of the best-known imagery of that era. Ivy sits comfortably within that tradition of graceful, design-led pictures.
On your wall: It would suit a study, bedroom or living room where a decorative vintage poster adds a quiet period character, especially alongside plants or softly toned furnishings.
