Leonetto Cappiello's 1908 poster advertises 'A los Mandarines Cafés y Tés'. A smiling, turbaned figure in a striped red-and-green costume carries a coffee tray, set against solid black. It is a lithograph, printed in Paris by Vercasson. The bold figure standing out from a dark ground is the approach Cappiello is known for. He was among the first poster artists to use it, and it marked a clear break from the more painterly posters that came before.
On your wall: The vivid red and green against black suit a kitchen, café corner, dining room or hallway, where the warm, lively figure can bring a little colour to the wall.

Leonetto Cappiello was an Italian and French poster designer and painter who lived and worked mainly in Paris. He is often called the father of modern advertising. While earlier poster artists favoured a painterly look, he took the opposite path, setting bold figures against black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters that came before.
