This 1896 poster by Alphonse Mucha was made as a calendar for La Plume. A woman is shown in profile, wearing a jewelled headdress, and behind her head runs a ring of zodiac signs. Leafy borders and scattered stars frame the figure, and a calendar panel gives the design its practical purpose. The flowing, ornamental treatment of the woman and the plant forms is typical of Art Nouveau, the style in which Mucha worked while living in Paris. He was widely known for stylised, decorative posters, and this one shows how he could combine a portrait, symbolism and lettering in a single, balanced composition.
On your wall: Its ornamental detail and astrological theme suit a study, a reading corner, a hallway or a bedroom, especially in rooms with a vintage or Art Nouveau character.
