This is plate 24 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, made between 1899 and 1904. It is a chromolithograph, a colour printing method based on stone, and it shows desmid algae in soft greens and pinks. The forms are arranged on a cream page, with the printed header and caption that belong to the plate. Haeckel was a zoologist and naturalist as well as an artist, and his plates bring close observation of living things together with a strong sense of design. Here, the small organisms are given room to be seen as shapes and patterns.
On your wall: Its gentle greens, pinks and cream tones suit studies, living rooms and bedrooms, and sit well beside other botanical prints or natural wood.

Ernst Haeckel was a German zoologist, naturalist, physician and professor who also worked as an artist. He described and named thousands of new species, drew a family tree linking all living things, and coined terms such as ecology and phylum. He helped introduce Charles Darwin's ideas to Germany.
