This is Plate 11 from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. The book's full title explains its approach: caterpillars and worms of Suriname are shown through their changes, each placed on the plant, flower or fruit where it was found. The work was drawn from life in America and at life size. Merian was a naturalist who observed insects directly, and her work helped establish that insects pass through a life cycle rather than appearing by spontaneous generation. Plates like this one bring botanical and insect study together in a single image.
On your wall: Well suited to studies, dining rooms, hallways and living spaces where a botanical subject adds quiet interest, particularly in homes that favour natural history themes.
