This plate comes from Maria Sibylla Merian's Metamorphosis insectorum surinamensium, published in 1705. It is a hand-coloured engraving of a watermelon vine, with one fruit cut open to show its inside. Among the leaves are a cocoon, a spiny caterpillar and a moth, so that several stages of an insect's life appear together with the plant it was found on. The full title promises caterpillars and worms shown with their changes, each placed on the plants, flowers and fruits where it lived. Merian was a naturalist and illustrator who documented insects by observing them directly, and her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle.
On your wall: Its natural subject and hand-coloured detail suit a kitchen, dining room, study or hallway, especially where botanical or naturalist prints already hang.

Maria Sibylla Merian was a German-Dutch naturalist, entomologist and scientific illustrator. She was among the first European naturalists to record insects through direct observation. Her work showed that insects pass through a life cycle rather than arising by spontaneous generation. She descended from the Frankfurt branch of the Swiss Merian family.
