This is plate 51 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, a lithograph devoted to Collosphaera and the Polycyttaria. It presents a dozen colonial radiolarians, each one a tiny organism drawn at a scale that lets us study its structure. The palette is restrained, built around yellow and blue-grey, which gives the arrangement a calm, even rhythm. Haeckel was a zoologist and naturalist as well as an artist, and the plate shows how closely those interests were joined in his work. It rewards a slow look, as each form reveals its own pattern.
On your wall: Its soft yellow and blue-grey tones suit studies, living rooms and quiet hallways, particularly where a natural-history or botanical mood is wanted.
