This plate comes from Basilius Besler's Hortus Eystettensis of 1613, in the hand-coloured 'Fürstenausgabe'. It shows two red-fruited capsicum plants, each drawn in full with its roots visible. Both carry Latin inscriptions: 'Piper Indicum orbiculatum Medium' and 'Piper Indicum rotundum aculeatum'. The engraved lines are precise, and the colouring was added by hand. Besler was a Nuremberg apothecary and botanist, and this book is his best-known work. The red fruits stand out clearly against the pale ground of the page.
On your wall: The red fruits and fine botanical detail suit a kitchen, dining room or study, especially where a touch of warm colour would be welcome.
