Venus tries to hold back Adonis in a woodland scene, set among Germanic buildings rather than a classical backdrop.

Venus, the goddess of love, pleads with her mortal lover Adonis not to go hunting the boar that will eventually kill him, and she does not succeed. Gillis van Coninxloo places this small drama in the foreground of a broad landscape, with Germanic architecture instead of a classical setting. It was painted in the 1580s in oil on copper, in the Netherlands. Woodlands were still a fairly new subject in European painting at the time, and this work anticipates the fully forested landscapes that became established in the 1600s.
On your wall: Its woodland setting and mythological story suit a study, library or quiet sitting room where there is time to look closely and follow the scene.

Gillis van Coninxloo was a Flemish landscape painter who began his career in Antwerp. He spent the last twenty years of his life working abroad, first in Germany and then in the Dutch Republic. Around the turn of the 17th century, he helped shape Northern landscape art, particularly through his development of the forest landscape.
