Vincent van Gogh, 1890
A wide green wheatfield stretches beneath a dark blue sky, where heavy white clouds gather and swirl above the horizon.

Painted in oil on canvas in 1890, this is a wide, horizontal landscape by Vincent van Gogh. A flat expanse of green wheat fills the lower part of the picture, with touches of yellow among the greens. Above it, a deep blue sky holds a few heavy white clouds that seem to turn and gather, giving the scene a brooding, restless mood. The format is long and low, measuring about 50 by 101 centimetres, which lets the eye travel slowly across the field. Since 1973 the painting has been on permanent loan to the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
On your wall: Its calm greens and deep blues suit a living room, study or hallway, especially above a sofa or sideboard where the wide format has room to stretch.

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, regarded as one of the most influential figures in Western art. In little over a decade he produced around 2,100 works, including about 860 oil paintings, most of them in his final two years. He is known for landscapes, still lifes and portraits, painted in bold colour with expressive, energetic brushwork.
