Félix Vallotton, 1894
A long-haired bather turns her back to us in rippling water, while figures in simple shifts wait on the shore. Black and white, and very calm.

Félix Vallotton made this woodcut in 1894. A nude woman with long hair is seen from behind, low in the rippling water. Behind her, several bathers in shifts stand along the shore. The image is built entirely from black and white, so the ripples, the figures and the bank are shaped by contrast alone. Vallotton, a Swiss and French artist linked with Les Nabis, was an important figure in the development of the modern woodcut. The title, Le bain, appears in the lower left.
On your wall: Its stark black and white suits calm, minimalist rooms such as a hallway, bedroom, bathroom or study, where it can hang as a quiet focal point.
