Claude Monet, 1882
Monet's low tide at Pourville brings a Normandy fishing village to life, with a broad beach, steep cliffs and the sea close by.

This is one of several views Monet painted of Pourville, a fishing village on the Normandy coast of France. The village had a boardwalk, a broad beach and striking cliffs. Monet felt the place itself was unremarkable, but the landscape inspired him. He wrote of being as close to the sea as one could be, on the pebbled beach, with the waves beating at the foot of the house. In the spring of 1882 he stayed in a small hotel there, much like the dwellings at the foot of the cliff on the right of this painting. It is oil on fabric.
On your wall: Its coastal subject suits living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where a calm view of the sea and cliffs would be welcome.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
