About this artwork

This is a watercolour and ink drawing of a harbour scene. A sailing ship lies moored in the foreground, with other boats close by, while trees and a house line the water's edge. The work is signed 'P. Signac Paimpol 5 Août', so the artist marked both the place and the day on the sheet itself. Working in watercolour and ink gives the scene a light, fluid touch, with the rigging and hulls set against the softer greens of the shore. Signac is best known as a French Neo-Impressionist who, with Georges Seurat, helped develop Pointillism.

On your wall: Its harbour subject and soft watercolour tones would suit a living room, study, hallway or bedroom, especially where a calm, coastal feeling is welcome.

About Paul Signac

Paul Signac was a French painter associated with Neo-Impressionism. Working alongside Georges Seurat, he helped develop Pointillism, a technique in which a picture is built from small, separate touches of colour. His name is closely linked with that approach, and it remains the reason his work is so often discussed today.
