Painted in 1874 by Claude Monet, this work takes its title from a bridge at Argenteuil, which is the subject a viewer will find at its heart. Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism, and he devoted his career to expressing nature as he perceived it, often working outdoors. The year 1874 also saw the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped to initiate as an alternative to the Salon. It is a good picture to look at with that background in mind, as an example of the approach that gave the movement its character.
On your wall: A calm landscape subject like this suits living rooms, studies and hallways, particularly where you want a touch of Impressionist painting without anything overly formal.
