Claude Monet, 1906
Lilies drift across a pond whose surface holds the reflections of trees and clouds, with no bank or horizon in sight.

Monet made this painting in 1906, in the middle of the years he devoted to the water garden at Giverny, which he had created a few years after buying the property in 1890. The nearly square format leaves out the usual bands of land, sky and water and keeps our eyes on the surface alone. Clusters of lilies at bottom left and top right frame a watery path, while trees and clouds are reflected in the water. Monet called these works "an obsession", and technical examination shows he changed the painting many times as he worked. It belongs to a group made between 1903 and 1908.
On your wall: Its watery, reflective scene suits calm spaces such as living rooms, bedrooms, studies or quiet corners where the eye can wander.

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
