Painted in oil on canvas in 1909, this is a portrait of the actress Maude Adams (1872–1953) in the role of Joan of Arc. It belongs to the tradition of the historiated portrait, where a sitter is shown through a character and the symbols around her. Mucha includes cherry blossom, a lily, a shawl and a corset among the details of the figure. The work is Art Nouveau, the movement with which Mucha is most closely associated, and it is now held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mucha was a Czech painter and graphic artist, known for his stylised, decorative theatrical posters made in Paris.
On your wall: Its theatrical subject and floral details suit a living room, study or bedroom, especially where vintage posters and softly decorative interiors are already part of the mix.
