About this artwork

This lithographic poster was designed by Eugène Grasset, who was born in Lausanne, and printed by G. de Malherbe et Cie in 1890. It advertises the Théâtre National de l'Odéon's subscription to its Soirées Classiques, held on Mondays and Fridays, for the fourth year, 1890–1891. The season offered fifteen performances: five pairing works from the classical repertoire, including Corneille, Molière and Racine, five devoted to foreign plays such as Romeo and Juliet and Don Carlos, and five chosen from new productions of the winter season. The signature appears at the lower right. The original is held at the Musée Carnavalet and measures about 121 by 82 centimetres.

On your wall: Its lettering and theatrical subject suit a study, library, hallway or living room where a vintage poster can bring a sense of Parisian stage history.
