This is plate 33 from Ernst Haeckel's Kunstformen der Natur, produced between 1899 and 1904. The page shows numbered drawings of bryozoans of the genus Flustra, arranged on a grey ground. The printed header and caption remain in view, and the aged paper margins give the plate the look of a book page that has been handled and kept. Haeckel was a zoologist and marine biologist as well as an artist, and the plate combines his scientific interest with careful, decorative composition.
