This plate comes from The Birds of New Guinea, John Gould's work on the birds of New Guinea and the adjacent Papuan islands, published in 1875. It is titled Paradisaea papuana, a bird of paradise, and appears in the first volume. Gould was an English ornithologist whose bird monographs were illustrated by plates from his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and several other artists, among them Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. He is also remembered for his work on The Birds of Australia, and for identifying the birds now nicknamed Darwin's finches.

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
