About this artwork

This hand-coloured lithograph plate shows three green hummingbirds with rufous tails, feeding at a pink flower on a leafy vine. The scene is captioned Lophornis chalybeus, the name of the species shown. The plate belongs to A Monograph of the Trochilidae, a work on hummingbirds, and appears in its third volume. The soft pink of the bloom sits against the greens of the birds and foliage, and the hand colouring gives the plate a gentle, even tone.

On your wall: Its greens and soft pinks suit a calm living room, a study, a hallway or a bedroom where a botanical touch is welcome.

About John Gould

John Gould was an English ornithologist who published monographs on birds, with plates by his wife, Elizabeth Gould, and artists including Edward Lear, Joseph Wolf and William Matthew Hart. His seven-volume Birds of Australia, from the 1840s, led many to regard him as the father of Australian bird study. He also identified the birds now called Darwin's finches.
