About this artwork

Painted by Claude Monet in 1864, this oil landscape shows a dirt road curving through the countryside near Honfleur, close to the Ferme Saint-Siméon. Sunlight falls across the track, while the trees on either side carry warm autumn tones. A wooden fence follows the bend of the road and helps draw the eye along it. Monet signed the work 'C. Monet' in the lower left corner. It is an early view in a long career devoted to landscape, and it shows his interest in ordinary rural scenes.

On your wall: The warm autumn colours and quiet country subject suit living rooms, hallways and studies, especially where natural wood or earthy tones are already present.

About Claude Monet

Claude Monet was a French painter and a founder of Impressionism. He devoted his long career to expressing nature as he perceived it, working especially in outdoor landscape painting. The movement takes its name from his painting Impression, Sunrise, shown in 1874 at the First Impressionist Exhibition, which he helped initiate as an alternative to the Salon.
