This colour woodblock print belongs to Hokusai's series of thirty-six views of Mount Fuji, made between 1829 and 1833. Fuji was a familiar presence in Japanese travel writing of the 19th century, and maps sometimes marked it with a mountain-shaped icon and pointed out where travellers could see it best. This view is sometimes called "Red Fuji". It shows the mountain at a moment between late summer and early autumn, when it takes on a reddish colour. The print dates from the early 1830s, during Japan's Edo period.
On your wall: With its reddish mountain and clear sky, it suits calm living rooms, studies and hallways, and sits well in interiors that favour Japanese or quietly natural styles.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. He helped widen the style beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants and animals. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, influenced Van Gogh and Monet.
