Poppies, seen through the eyes of Katsushika Hokusai: a flower study in the ukiyo-e tradition, where plants take centre stage.
No VAT charged. Free delivery in Switzerland from CHF 99. Delivery details
This is a print of poppies by Katsushika Hokusai, the Edo-period Japanese artist who worked as both painter and printmaker. It belongs to his ukiyo-e work, a tradition he helped widen well beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to take in landscapes, plants and animals. Flowers like these show that broader outlook. Hokusai is best known for Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, and his prints went on to influence Vincent van Gogh and Claude Monet during the wave of Japonisme in late nineteenth-century Europe.
On your wall: A flower study like this suits a quiet corner of a living room, bedroom, hallway or study, especially where botanical or Japanese-inspired touches are welcome.
