This Japanese woodblock print shows a winter landscape under snow. A mountain rises in the background, its slopes blanketed in white, while a tall pine stands out in the scene. Thatched buildings sit along the shore, and many small sailing boats are scattered across the water. Hokusai made the print in 1814, and it belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition, in which landscapes became a central subject. The quiet, wintry mood comes from the contrast between the snow and the darker details of roofs, trees and boats.
On your wall: Its calm wintry scene and soft, snowy palette suit living rooms, studies and hallways, especially in calm, minimal or Japanese-inspired interiors.

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker who worked in the ukiyo-e tradition during the Edo period. He helped widen the style beyond portraits of courtesans and actors to include landscapes, plants and animals. His series Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes The Great Wave off Kanagawa, influenced Van Gogh and Monet.
