About this artwork

In this print by Ohara Koson, a white cockatoo sits on a branch next to a pomegranate. It was made in Japan in 1927 as a colour woodcut, with the design set down in black outline and filled in with blocks of colour. Blind printing, where pressure alone leaves a raised impression in the paper, adds a subtle relief. Watanabe Shōzaburō published the print, and both names appear on it. Koson was a designer of woodblock prints working in the shin-hanga movement, and birds were a subject he returned to often.

On your wall: The white bird and the fruit suit calm spaces such as a living room, study or bedroom, and work well in a quiet corner or beside a reading chair.
