About this artwork
This double portrait shows Paul Lafond on the left and Alphonse Cherfils on the right, two friends of Degas, absorbed in looking at a painting. Lafond later became curator of the art museum at Pau, while Cherfils was a collector who spoke up for the Impressionists. Degas inscribed the upper left corner with a dedication to his dear friends. Through their influence, his works were chosen for the annual exhibitions of the Société des Amis des Arts. The picture they examine is probably by Degas himself, so the scene reflects both friendship and working life. It is oil on a wooden panel.
